Tossa, an Artists’ Retreat

Free audio-guided route

In the 1930s, Tossa de Mar became an unexpected meeting place for painters, writers and intellectuals from all over Europe. Drawn by the light, the sea and the calm of a small fishing village, many artists found inspiration here, and some also found refuge in turbulent times. Marc Chagall called it the “blue paradise”, and figures such as André Masson, Georges Kars and Jean Metzinger left their mark on the town. This creative, cosmopolitan atmosphere earned Tossa the nickname “the Babel of the Arts”.

We now invite you to follow in their footsteps with the audio-guided route Tossa, an Artists’ Retreat. As you stroll through the streets, beaches and hidden corners of the Vila Vella, you will discover the stories, characters and landscapes that captivated a whole generation of artists. The route brings you closer to the Tossa they lived in and painted, and invites you to see the town through new eyes.

Tossa de Mar is much more than a destination. It is heritage, it is culture, it is inspiration. Wander its paths and let yourself be guided by its timeless beauty.
