The Women’s Museum<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>

This Museum opened in 2020 to explain, from the women\u2019s point of view, how life in Tossa was before the beginning of tourism, as well as the great changes that this supposed to the town.<\/p>\n

With the aim to explain the role of women in many different fields, the Museum displays several different sections: \u00a0the fishing section, a field where women assisted the fishermen in daily tasks such as mending the fishing nets and selling or salting the caught fish; \u00a0\u00a0the domestic section, where all those always undervalued tasks -without which no society could survive- were carried out; or the countryside section, where women collaborated in agricultural and cattle raising tasks.<\/p>\n

The Women\u2019s Museum is located at Can Ganga, a 16th<\/sup>-century fortified farmhouse that has kept this name referring to one of the families who lived there.<\/p>\n

This was one of the first farmhouses built outside the town walls at the time of the 16th-century population increase. It is a fine example of a fortified farmhouse, built to be resistant because, at the time of its construction, it stood alone close to the sea and would have been an easy target for pirates. The building has a magnificent rounded doorway with a machicolation extending out over it to offer protection against potential pirate raids. The Gothic windows, with beautifully sculpted cherubs or putti, are also noteworthy.<\/p>\n

Inside the building there is a perfectly preserved pantry, carved out of the rock.<\/p>\n

The building has been restored and belongs to the municipality.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
